Now that all 32 NFL teams have reported for their respective training camps, let’s take a look at which former Hokies have arrived at camp and are looking to make pro rosters in 2014.
With the 14th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Bears selected former Tech cornerback Kyle Fuller, who has impressed many in Chicago and could land some legitimate playing time next year. Out of last year’s defense, LB Tariq Edwards (Dolphins), CB Antone Exum (Vikings), and DE James Gayle (Titans) have all avoided the first round of cuts and are eyeing spots on their respective rosters.
Fourth-round draft pick Logan Thomas is projected to beat out Ryan Lindley as the third quarterback on the Arizona Cardinals roster, and could find some possible playing time in the future after the departure of seasoned veteran Carson Palmer. Tyrod Taylor (Ravens) and Michael Vick (Jets) join Thomas as the other two quarterbacks on rosters.
Safety Kam Chancellor, former All-ACC selection and now Super Bowl Champion with the Seattle Seahawks, started all of last year in Seattle’s well-known ‘Legion of Boom’ secondary.
Wide receiver is a position in which five former Hokies reside on NFL rosters, including the top two receivers in school history, Jarrett Boykin (Packers) and Danny Coale (Steelers).
Virginia Tech is also known for it’s hard-hitting and physical defensive backs, nine of which are currently on rosters. Among these are multi-time Pro Bowler Brandon Flowers (Chargers), Jayron Hosley (Giants), and Roc Carmichael (Eagles).
After a long stint with the Panthers and a brief one with the Bears, long-time starter James Anderson will now start in the New England Patriots’ defense.
Overall, the number of former Hokies on NFL rosters is third in the ACC, behind Miami (54) and Florida State (49).
